What makes Indian music so melodies?

 Several things make Indian traditional music popular all over the world. It plays a remarkable role in the unification of the whole world. The contribution of all religious cultures in India can be felt in the music if you listen to it carefully.

 In other countries mostly 2-3 musical instruments are mixed to form a piece of art. Whereas in India our music directors use 10 to 15 instruments and it is not an easy job to mix and master so many instruments at a time in such a way that they sounds like a good piece. Indian classical music can be classified into two one North Indian classical music popularly known as Hindustani. South Indian classical music, on the other hand is generally known as Carnatic or Karnatic.

When this classical form of music is accompanied by dance your eyes will witness something mesmerizing as the body will act as a medium of communication and will narrate the music to the mass people. There is some special instrument that makes classical music more powerful. Sitar is one of them playing an important role in north Indian music. On the other hand, tanpura is used by south Indian classical musicians.

History of Sitar

Persia word “sehtar” is actully where the word sitar is derived from, it  means “three-stringed.” It is indeed a very famous instrument that has earned global recognition with a pleasant note. People in the UK are so fond of it that you can find some sitar shops in the UK selling sitars and tanpuras. Sitar is a stringed instrument mostly popular in north India. It actually belongs to the family of lutes. Sitar is famous in Pakistan and Bangladesh as well.

Structure of sitar

It measures about 1.2 meters or (4 feet) in length, the sitar has a deep pear-shaped gourd body; with a long, wide, hollow wooden neck; it also has two peg front and side tuning pegs, and 20 arched with movable frets. Its strings are metal; there are usually five strings, one or two drone strings used to accentuate the rhythm or pulse. 13 sympathetic strings just beneath the frets in the neck that are tuned to the notes of the music called Raga.

The beautiful melody or the music that comes out from the Sitar when strings number 21 to 23 are used. Jawari commands the tone and the tune.
